Is historical sites, beautiful weather, and the energetic culture and lifestyle is enough to send visitors by the millions. If this weren’t enough to send you packing, the Greece beaches that compliment its glorious landscape and climate will win you over with ease. Greece boasts just under 14,000 km of coastline and enough beach to satisfy the many tourist who flock to experience them. A dream which is fulfilled to its entirety thanks to the turquoise and very warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. And if the beauty and warmth of the water doesn’t impress you, maybe the fact that Greece beaches are ranked in the top three cleanest in the world by Blue Flag Beaches. When my family goes to Greece we like to visit the Belle Helene beach which is south of Sparta (approx 100 km). I’m terrified of water, but the calmness and warmth that this beach in particular gives me helps trump my fears so that I can enjoy hours of peaceful relaxation in the shallow waters. See, I have arthritis. Living in Canada is not necessarily the best remedy for this ailment, seeing how for three quarters of the year I’m freezing my but off! The unpredictable and quick weather changes, along with the fridgid winters, attack my arthritis mercilessly. One time I was talking with my family doctor and he recommended the next time I visit Greece to make sure that I submerged my body under the water at any of the Greece beaches. You see, the salt content and some other factors that are beyond my understanding, are very therapeutic for arthritis. On my next Greek holiday, my husband and I were taken to a beach we’ve never been to before by our in-laws (my son in-law’s parents). It was smaller than other Greek beaches I’ve been to, and to my delight, the waters were very calm. So calm, in fact, the surface appeared like glass. Yippee! I can now sit chest deep in the shallow end without a wave smashing into my face, washing me two feet back shore (true story). So off I went and had one of the most satisfying experiences in my life. I hadn’t noticed, but I was sitting in the water for over three hours, aloof to my surroundings thanks to beauty of my now favorite of all the Greece beaches, Belle Helene (right), and of course, the time! I enjoyed my time at Belle Helene so much, we visited the beach every day for the next two weeks. Every day I would sit in those calm, warm waters and wouldn’t you know, after a week my arthritis was nearly unnoticeable! After two weeks I was beginning to wonder whether Greece should be my home for the twilight years of my life. Moving there would certain solve my arthritis problems! Unfortunately, moving to Greece right now is not realistic and I am a few years from experiencing the “twilight” of my life. So back to Canada I go, thinking that my arthritis was waiting for me. One day passes. Then two days. A week. Then a month. After five months, my arthritis, though not quite gone, was very manageable. My good days beat out my bad days by at least 20/1, and my frequent “therapy” sessions at Greece beaches are the reason why. Well, I “believe” they are. My son thinks it’s psychological, and maybe. There is one thing for sure, though: I have found a treatment that gives me an excuse to visit Greece more often.
